The sugar-beet weevil (Bothynoderes punctiventris Germar) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) is one of the most important insect pests of sugar-beet throughout central, eastern and southeastern parts of Europe, including Ukraine and Russia. The damage by the overwintering adult beetles is caused by feeding on sugar-beet seedlings in early spring.
Telenga (1940) indicated that outbreaks of the beet weevil Cleonus punctiventris [Bothynoderes punctiventris], Germ. in the Ukraine are largely due to agricultural practices that decrease the effectiveness of the Pteromalid wasp (Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae), Xenocrepis (Caenocrepis) bothynoderis, Gromakov, which parasitises the eggs of the weevil and is widely distributed in the Ukraine.
